*Pictures of the Week* Bed Bath and Beyond… Adorable!

Registering was one the most fun parts of wedding planning!  Denny may beg to differ on the fun level, but I slowly walked through every single nook & cranny of Bed Bath & Beyond and envisioned how each item would perfectly fit into our “someday” million dollar mansion.  I envisioned sipping champagne from fancy flutes, savoring filet off our fine china and relishing lazy Sunday mornings in my fancy schmancy white cotton robe.

Turns out we ended up scanning only practical items, but hey, who doesn’t dream a little bit while they register?

And now almost 5 years later, we are happier than ever that we went with practicality versus fancy-cality (is that even a word?)…

We are glad our plastic water bottles have lids so they don’t get spilled when Kenzie knocks them over.  We are glad our paper plates make clean-up a breeze.  And when it comes to lazy Sunday mornings, well, let’s just say I am beyond glad when I when I get to sleep past 5:15 am… who has time to lounge around in a bathrobe?!

And aside from practical, it turns out that some of the wonderful gifts our friends & family showered us with when we said I Do would actually come in handy to contain a very busy and adorable little baby girl.

Maybe that’s what they refer to in the “Beyond” part of the name…

There you have it… trick #492 of Mommyhood – babies are Bed Bath & Beyond Happy just hanging out with you in everyday items!  No expensive toys needed.

Old Blog Meet New Blog… Old Blog, New Blog… New Blog, Old Blog…

Step into the time machine friends… we’re going back all the way to… FUNKYTOWN!

Nope, just kidding.  We’re actually just going back to March 2012.  I was pregnant and full of crazy ideas.  I thought having a baby meant sitting around all day and singing lullabies.  I thought we were having a boy.  I thought I could handle 2 blogs (one personal blog for family, and one blog for fellow Moms laughing my way through parenting and pregnancy)!   HA!   Funny, right?

The good news is that I’ve landed back in reality and I’ve learned the real truth about all 3 of the above misconceptions (our May 2012 sonogram sure put a top to the blue clothes purchasing).  But the purpose of this post is more to focus on the error of my ways in thinking I could dual blog.  Crazy right?

Since my hallucination-filled  days of pregnancy I have moved solely to this mommymcblog site but unfortunately I still have some of my old posts at the other blog.  And I feel like I moved out of an old apartment and left all my belongings.  So slowly but surely I’m going to bring all the old posts onto this site so all my blogging randomness can finally be together.

Soooo long blog post made short… you’ll be seeing some “new/old” posts arriving on this site.  I am not trying to trick you by re-posting old stuff, I’m just finishing up the move.

If you read this already, feel free to continue on your merry way to other Websites.  And If you haven’t read this before, you are also welcome to continue on your merry way to other sites (let’s face it, my ideal of humor is still pretty lame).  But I do appreciate you stopping by!   Hope to see you back again soon.

The Hunger Games!

Its seems only appropriate to be blogging about some of the hot conversations in pop culture society so here goes my thoughts on the Hunger Games…
Be warned, this is my personal twist on the Hunger Games.  The post is not about Katniss and it does not take place in Panem.  In fact, I still haven’t even read the books on my Kindle (the first trimester tired-ness hasn’t let me stay awake to do much reading lately).  Instead this post is about the McGee Hunger Games that take place on a nightly basis when Denny or I bravely ask the question of “What do you want for dinner?”  My Grandma always likes to remind me that marriage is not all about champagne and roses, and I’m rudely reminded of it every night at about 5:50 when I’m NOT zipping around the kitchen in a cute apron sauteing, marinating and offering my husband “try this” samples on a fancy wooden spoon.
Instead of “June Cleavering” we embark on what I like to call “Hunger Games Circuit Training.”  We both sulk around the kitchen and stare blankly into the fridge, then we move to the pantry and stare blankly into it, and the we pause at the counter to pretend to be think of a fabulous recipe.  This continues for about 5-7 minutes, and then we start a game of Hunger Games Ping-Pong
“Hm, what do you want for dinner?”
“Dinner? Hmm”    (as if this is a surprise)
“Yeah, dinner”
“Uhhh, what do you want?”
“Not sure, that is why I’m asking you.”
“Umm, how about chicken?”
“Nope had that last night… burgers?”
“Nope, no buns.”
and back and forth and back and forth.
Don’t get me wrong.  I enjoy cooking… I enjoy eating… and I enjoy shopping (I excel at it), but I seem to fail about 80% of the time in getting all three of these together before the first whistle signals the start of the hunger games.  Every weekend I try to get a meal plan together and then shop accordingly.  Sometimes it is a success.  Every Sunday I try to figure out what need thawed/what needs to stay frozen/what needs prepped.  Sometimes it is a success.  So as a result, we occasionally eat healthy, balanced, pre-planned meals (and my cute apron gets used).  When that happens, we are both happy and I feel one step closer to a Katniss and Peeta eternal love!
When that doesn’t happen, we get stuck in the Hunger Games Circuit Training session.  Luckily Denny is a very good husband and a good cook and he often saves the day.  But more often than I like to admit, we end up supporting the Velveeta Mac & Cheese stock price or worse we end up jumping in the car to Eat Fresh or get a Hot & Ready.
Fortunately this is not the biggest problem in the world, and clearly neither of us are close to starving, but I’m always looking for ways to win the Hunger Games.  If anyone else has walked away a Hunger Games champ, please tell your secrets!!  I’m in training and could use a little help!

Six Months with our Sweet Girl!

WOW, Six Months went by fast.

Really really fast!

4_2013 Makenzie Love

………………………………………………..

Tonight we both hung out in her room during bedtime and we read her On The Night You were Born (such a sweet little book if you haven’t read it yet)…

“On the night you were born, the moon shone with such wonder that the stars peeked in to see you and the night wind whispered, ‘Life will never be the same.’

Because there had never been anyone like you… ever in the world.”

and I got very emotional thinking about that awesome night over 6 months ago.

It’s sad to think we’ll never swaddle and snuggle our sweet Makenzie newborn again.  It’s a slight relief to think that we made it this far and it is getting SO much easier (this is true new Moms, it gets way easier, I promise).  And it’s fun and exciting to think that it gets more fun every single day with her.  Watching Makenzie grow and explore the world has been the BEST and most AMAZING experience ever.  We’re smitten.  🙂

………………………………………………..

Here’s what our girl has been up to this month:

Stats:  Weight – 15 lbs, 14 oz – 40th percentile;  Height – 25 inches tall – 25th percentile;  Head circumference – 42.2 inches – 34th percentile;  Cuteness – 100th percentile!!

4_17 6 mo checkup 2

She’s such a little peanut!

Eating:  Our girl is fearless with trying foods.  So far she has liked everything – peas, carrots, squash, prunes, bananas, apples, sweet potatoes – you name it and she’ll eat it.  It’s hilarious to watch her cute little face as she experiences new stuff.

She also likes to eat her 6-month picky stickies…

4_13 Sticker eating

Yum! (Yes I took it away from her the moment after this picture was taken)

4_13 Sticker

The “after” view of the picky sticky

Playing:  Makenzie is interested in everything around her.  It’s so cool to watch her take it all in, grab for it, touch it, try to eat it, roll to it.  She’s one busy little girl.  He favorite toys include her jumperoo and the floor.

Learning & Exploring:  It seems like every single day Kenzie Girl does something new!  In the past few weeks she has perfected rolling both ways.  She’s getting good at scooting (backwards only) and she is a sitting pro!   We think she is getting close to crawling because she can hold herself up but she hasn’t quite figured out how to make it all work together (thank gosh – we don’t have baby proofing completed yet).  When it comes to communicating, her newest trick is shaking her head No.  It’s Hilarious!  How do they learn this stuff so young?

4_15 yellow 3

Happy girl sitting up on her own

Sleeping:  She’s back to sleeping through the night… normally 10-11 hours every night – heck yeah!  But her day naps aren’t as great.  She normally only naps about 10-40 minutes 2 times per day.  See below… I can’t make this up!

4_4 Nap schedule

Best Time of the Day:  Kenz has calmed down SO much from her (slightly) fussy infant days (or maybe we just know what we’re doing now?).  Either way, life is much easier (good-bye witching hour).    Kenz is such a sweet baby girl, and loves to go new places.  It’s awesome because we can pretty much take her anywhere as long as we are armed with toys.

Worst Time of the Day:  Saying good-bye to her every morning 🙁   (but I guess that counts more as a sad time for us).  She loves her friends at Doodlebugs and probably doesn’t even notice that we’re gone.

Some Funny Things This Month:  Life with a babe is pretty hilarious.  Now that’s she’s good at flipping over she has wiggled away diaper-less on more than one diaper-changing occasion.  And with the introduction of new solid foods, the blowout has been taken to new heights, yikes!

Makenzie pretty much cracks us up all day.  Her laugh is so darn cute I think it could actually be used to resolve wars.

We could not be more grateful to have such a sweet, healthy, cutie girl.   She has filled every day of the past half year with so much love & cuteness.  Looking forward to what the next 6 months brings!

Stay tuned, it’s going to be a fun ride.

Picture of the Week *Meet Mr. Doodlebug*

Fridays in the McGee house are normally pretty happy.  How can we not be in a good mood knowing that we are just a few hours away from two full days of family fun, minimal obligations and relaxed schedules?  No need to pack lunches and make bottles before bed; no need to lay out clothes for the next day; no need to set the alarm for 5:15 am.   Ahh, the good stuff in life!

Despite the chaos going on in our country, Denny and I both left the house yesterday morning in a pretty good mood.  At about 10am our little days got a bit brighter when a sweet little e-mail popped in our inboxes.  The awesome team at Doodle bugs snapped a picture of our little girl meeting Mr. Doodle bug himself!

Too cute!

Kenzie didn’t seem too impressed but we definitely were.  🙂

Enjoy!

My favorite phone call of the year

Ring Ring…               unknown number…                  and there it is!

My favorite phone call of the year.  It’s like Christmas Morning!  It’s the annual phone call from the OU Phon-a-thon!!!!

YESSSS!  And Ironically, it came a few days ago.   Just in time for today – OUr Day!

OU banner

I might be the only person in the world that gets this excited about a telemarketer but I LOVE OU… I LOVE the Phon-a-thon and I LOVE all the reminders of how Denny and I ended up where we are today.  And this call is THE biggest reminder.

In an instant Denny and I are connected to the place where it all began via a current OU undergrad at the Phon-a-thon!  Don’t get me wrong, I love the life we lead today, but every year when we get our annual call, I become completely green (yes I intentionally said that) with envy of the person on the other line.  I can’t talk enough to them!

I ask them to tell me all about Court Street – the sights, the smells, the new bars.   I remind them that they should study less and stay out more.   I ask them to go to the Pub and have a fish bowl for me.  I ask them if they’ll go to Pita Pit for me.  I ask them to walk across College Green for me.

Normally they don’t know how to respond so it can sometimes get awkward by the time I ask them to sing Stand Up & Cheer, but sometimes I get a fun one and they just let me babble on about the land of Bricks and Beer!

But it’s not a Phon-A-Thon call without telling the poor kid on the other end of the phone WHY I love their call so much.  Truthfully, they probably would have hung up on me 20 minutes prior, but I wait to give them my Visa # until I tell them the story.  The story that started it all.  The call that changed my life.  Cliché, maybe.  Annoying, maybe.  But it’s the truth.  It was a call that changed my life.

The call on March 8, 2004 that connected me to Denny… my best friend, my hubby, the awesome Dad to Makenzie, the laundry do-er in our house (yes ladies he does the laundry), the man I’ll grow old with, the (sometimes) person that annoys me like crazy, the (frequently) person I annoy like crazy, the one who likes me just enough to deal with my crazy blogging, the one who still loves me when I’m cranky, grumpy, and hanging out on Sundays in gross sweats, but most importantly The One (the Only One) who said I Do to me at the same campus where he first said Hello to me.

Pretty cool, right?

Ahh to be young and in love again! (Almost 5 years and almost 15 pounds ago)

:: OUOUOUOUOUOUOUOUOUOUOUOUOUOUOUOUOUOU  ::

So for those of you that haven’t read it/heard it/lived it with us, here it is ….

(can also be found by googling “Calling for Love” Erin Denny McGee”)

Calling for love Erin Quilty, BSC ’05, and Dennis McGee, BSC ’02

By Erin Quilty

It was the type of cool, cloudy Athens afternoon that would have best been spent watching a movie with my sorority sisters. Instead I reluctantly agreed to work an extra Monday shift at the OU Phonathon.

Meanwhile in Washington, Pa., Denny McGee, a 2002 graduate, relished in the fact that his evening work meeting was unexpectedly cancelled. As fate would have it, these unforeseen changes in our evening schedules were the reason our paths crossed on that memorable March evening.

My Phonathon shift dragged on, and the name Dennis McGee popped up on my screen as the next alumni to call. Little did I know this name belonged to the man with whom I would one day grow old.

As I heard the phone ringing in my headpiece, I prepared for another conversation. “Hi Dennis, I’m Erin, a junior at Ohio University,” I said. Denny’s deep voice was full of enthusiasm as he talked about his time at OU. We immediately clicked, and the conversation flowed easily.

Although Denny was reluctant to donate, he was not shy to ask if he would ever talk to me again. I felt my heart beating in my throat when Denny asked if we could meet during his upcoming trip to Athens for baseball alumni weekend, but I politely declined. I knew immediately that I made a mistake turning down an opportunity to meet him, so I wrote down his number.

As I told my friends all about this amazing conversation, I was glowing. I could not explain the connection I felt with Denny, but I knew we both had found something special.

I could not stop thinking about Denny, so I turned to my favorite college research tool, Google.com. I found all of his OU baseball stats and also the Kalamazoo Kings Web site, which is Denny’s former independent minor-league baseball team. When I saw his charming smile, I knew I had to call him again.

It took me three days and a workout at Ping to finally get the nerve to call my alumni crush. As soon as I heard his voice on the other end of the line, I knew I had made the right decision. “Erin?” Denny asked. “Phonathon Erin?!? I was hoping to hear from you!” We talked another two hours that night and every night thereafter.

When Denny came to OU two months later for alumni baseball weekend, we were inseparable, and he continued to visit me almost every weekend until I graduated in June of 2005.

After two-and-a-half years of our long-distance relationship, I recently moved to Buffalo, N.Y., and we are finally together! Denny is a sales representative for R.J. Reynolds, and I am a sales manager at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Buffalo. We plan to someday get married on the campus of Ohio University.

Editor’s Note: Erin and Denny are engaged and have set a wedding date of Aug. 16, 2008, at Ohio University. The wedding party will consist of 10 former Bobcats. Congratulations!

Picture of the Week *Date Night*

Hi honey, I’m home!!

Hi Honey I'm Home (logo).jpg

After a pretty rough stretch at the McGee house I’ve returned to blog-ville!  I missed my laptop, but it waited for me like a good little laptop (even after I slathered it in Lysol).

………

Last Tuesday morning kicked off some less than stellar days in McGee history.  Imagine the scene in the Hangover when they first woke up in Vegas (minus the partying and the tiger in the bathroom)… that’s kind of how we felt.

What we thought was something that Denny ate, turned into a full-blown flu that visited both Denny and me (luckily it did not visit Makenzie-yay!).  It was a sleeping-on-the-bathroom-floor, hugging-the-toilet, blacking-out-due-to-dehydration flu-a-palooza.  It kicked our butts.

Unfortunately way worse than the flu was a few nights later when Makenzie was up all night with what turned out to be her first double ear infection.  Ouch and ouch!  Our poor babe was miserable, but bounced back great after a few days of snuggles and antibiotics.  She is such a little trooper!

4_2013 sick Kenzie

Sick peanut 🙁

………

BUT on a much brighter note, last week wasn’t all bad (you didn’t think I’d write a whole post about lame-o sickness, did you?).  Denny and I managed to squeeze in an awesome and much-needed date night between the fevers and the other fevers.  Thanks to the my parents for watching our girl, we took a little trip to the casino to see one of the funniest guys ever, JIM GAFFIGAN!!  True, we had to practically overdose on caffeine to stay awake for the show that went past 10pm, but we persevered and laughed our butts off!  We even made it out for a night-cap at our favorite Lancaster watering hole.  Go us!

Unfortunately we don’t have any pictures of us all dressed up and out on the town, but here’s something just as good.  Two ice-cold beers and a nice momento of a funny night.

jim gaffigan 2

Cheers to us!  And cheers to Lysol, Amoxicillin, immodium and Pepto!

Here’s to more nights of funs and less days with runs!  (C’mon, I couldn’t resist that rhyme)

Pictures of the Week *Easter Fun*

Hi friends,

It’s me, Makenzie!  I rolled over to Mom’s laptop to share some Easter pictures.  Mom keeps saying that she thought she left the hotel industry, at least until I was born, because lately we’ve been having lots of guests.  It’s SO fun!  The Hotel McGee is at 100% occupancy.  I just can’t help that people want to see me grow.

Mamaw and Pappap came this weekend, and so did the Easter Bunny!  Take a look at all the fun…

3_29 Touching the bunny

Here I am all ready for my school Easter Party!  “Hi Mr. Bunny!”

3_29 5 am tea party

I was so excited for Easter I woke Mommy up at 4:30 am. We had a tea party while we waited for everyone to wake up. (Thanks Aunt Lorraine for the fun toys!)

YAY!  Finally time to see what the Bunny brought!

3_31 hat 2

And the Bunny brought some sun too so we went for a walk.  Mommy made me wear this silly hat before we went outside.   “Mom I look like a fool!”

After that we had tons of fun playing!

Gotcha Mamaw!

But just when I let go of her hair she tickled me until I wet my diaper, oops.

They wouldn’t let me eat any chocolate so I went for Daddy’s foot.  It looked yummy!

But Ewww, this is gross.

3_25 Kenzie and Daddy

Oh well, Daddy made up for his stinky foot by giving me some giggles!  I guess I’ll forgive him.   He loves me so much!

That’s about it for now.  I better head back to dreamland!  I’ve got lots of growing to do, I’ll be SIX MONTHS this week!

Nighty night, xoxo
